Designing with Light

Posted

Lighting is one of the most important elements in a room. Light sets the tone and feel of a space; and should be among first things you consider when designing. Here are our suggestions for ideal illumination.

1.Observe the amount of natural light that comes into your home throughout the day and think about when each room will primarily be used. For example, in your living room, take notice of how sunlight enters the space, as this might interfere with seating placement or TV viewing. This important step can help direct floor plans and also identify where additional lighting may be needed.

2.Consider adding texture through your lighting by utilizing metal, ceramic or glass materials. You can even revive an old lamp by switching out the shade or adding rope around the base. Finials add a touch of elegance and interest to lamps with harps. Chandeliers are also a fun and elegant way to brighten up your lighting.

3.We recommend adding dimmers to all lighting, so that the ambiance can be adjusted to fit your mood. Whether you want to have a lively light-filled game night or create a more intimate dinner party setting, dimmers can make a huge impact with little investment.

4.Think about the “why” for lighting in each room: general room brightening, decoration, needed for reading, etc. From there you can consider the direction of the light source needed and the purpose of the fixture. Sconces can have a very dramatic effect and are great options for smaller rooms where space is limited. Lampshade’s shape control the direction and color of the light- a conical shade points the light source in one direction while a cylindrical shade diffuses it all over the room. An arm lamp can provide unidirectional light which is perfect for reading or highlighting artwork.

5.Another, often overlooked element, is the type of lightbulb you select. There are many bulb options: white, incandescent, yellow, filament bulb, etc and they each create a different effect. Try a few options to see which you prefer. Just avoic fluorescent lighting, as this produces a sterile and dull look. Don’t ever feel stuck with lighting as most fixtures can easily be swapped. It’s easy to convert any fixture from a plug-in to a hardwire and vice versa.
